Holy Orders
The Sacrament of Holy Orders is a cornerstone of the Catholic Church, through which men are consecrated to serve in the roles of deacon, priest, and bishop. This sacrament is rooted in the Apostolic Tradition, where Jesus Christ entrusted His mission to His Apostles, who were the first bishops, and to whom the authority to ordain was handed down.
Ordination consists of three degrees
- Deacon: Deacons assist bishops and priests in service, including proclaiming the Gospel, distributing Holy Communion, and performing works of charity.
- Priest: Priests act in the person of Christ, celebrating the Eucharist, administering the sacraments, preaching, and shepherding the faithful.
- Bishop: Bishops receive the fullness of the sacrament, overseeing the administration of sacraments, teaching, and governing the Church.
The Church teaches that Holy Orders imparts an indelible spiritual character, meaning that those ordained are permanently marked and dedicated to their sacred duties. This sacrament signifies and confers the grace of the Holy Spirit, enabling ordained ministers to serve the faithful and guide them in their spiritual journey.
